Canada stocks lower at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite down 0.22%

Investing.com – Canada stocks were lower after the close on Monday, as losses in the Healthcare, Materials and Energy sectors led shares lower.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite lost 0.22%.

The best performers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Aritzia Inc (TSX:ATZ), which rose 5.08% or 2.37 points to trade at 49.01 at the close. Meanwhile, Methanex Corporation (TSX:MX) added 3.14% or 2.06 points to end at 67.70 and TransAlta Corp (TSX:TA) was up 2.65% or 0.42 points to 16.29 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Lightspeed Commerce Inc (TSX:LSPD), which fell 8.23% or 2.16 points to trade at 24.09 at the close. Bausch Health Companies Inc (TSX:BHC) declined 8.03% or 0.96 points to end at 10.99 and South Bow Corp (TSX:SOBO) was down 5.90% or 2.18 points to 34.78.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Toronto Stock Exchange by 636 to 312 and 91 ended unchanged.

Shares in TransAlta Corp (TSX:TA) rose to 5-year highs; up 2.65% or 0.42 to 16.29.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 9.30% to 10.04 a new 1-month low.

Gold Futures for February delivery was down 0.77% or 20.59 to $2,660.41 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in January rose 0.28% or 0.19 to hit $68.19 a barrel, while the February Brent oil contract rose 0.11% or 0.08 to trade at $71.92 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.38% to 0.71, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.27% to 0.68.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.53% at 106.39.
